A set of 17-inch supermoto wheels with street tires is the quickest way to turn a Sur-Ron or Talaria into a pavement bike. The tires grip asphalt, the bike sits lower, and it turns in faster. Here's what fits which bike, how to choose tires, and what to check once it's on.
Why 17-inch wheels?
Most mid-size e-motos come on 19-inch wheels (the Talaria XXX runs a 19 front and 17 rear). Dropping to 17s with street tires gives you a bigger, flatter contact patch on pavement and quicker steering, and you get a lot more street tire options. The tradeoff: street tires are no good in loose dirt, and the bike sits lower, so ground clearance drops a little.

Choosing tires
Street / supermoto tires
For mostly-pavement riding, use a true street tire. The CST 17in supermoto tires are the replacements for the CST tires that come on many of these sets, and Pivotrax Cyber supermoto tires come in 12 to 19-inch sizes (sold one at a time, so order two). New tires are slippery until the surface wears in, so take it easy for the first few miles.
Dual-sport: one set of wheels for both
If you split your time between street and dirt and don't want a second wheel set, the Shinko 244 dual-sport tire is the budget answer. It's DOT compliant, rated roughly 70% on-road / 30% off-road, and the 2.75x19 size fits stock 19-inch rims. It won't grip like a real street tire on pavement or dig like a knobby in mud, but it does both well enough.
Keep your dirt wheels
Most riders keep the stock wheels with knobbies for trail days and swap. If your dirt setup is a 16-inch rear, the Dunlop Geomax MX14 16in is built for sand and mud. See all our e-moto tires.
Install tips
- Get the bike on a stand with both wheels off the ground.
- Remove the wheels. Move your rotors and sprocket over if the set doesn't include them (and swap in new rotor bolts with threadlocker if the old ones are worn).
- Install the new wheels with the correct spacers. Check that the rotors sit centered in the calipers and the wheel spins freely.
- Set chain tension and alignment, then torque the axle nuts to spec.
- Squeeze both brake levers a few times and do a slow test ride before you ride hard.

Things to know before you ride on the street
- A supermoto conversion doesn't make an off-road bike street legal. Check your state's registration and equipment rules.
- Run street pressures the tire maker recommends, not dirt pressures.
- Street speeds put more load on the brakes. If you're riding fast on pavement, look at our moto brake upgrade kits.
