"More range and more power" is the dream, and a battery upgrade can deliver both. But a battery isn't a simple bolt-on part. Voltage, capacity and how much current the pack can deliver all have to match the controller, motor and wiring. This guide explains what the numbers mean, when an upgrade is worth it, and what else you can do to ride farther.
The numbers that matter
- Voltage (V) mostly sets top speed and how hard the motor can pull at speed. Higher voltage needs a controller and electrical system rated for it.
- Amp-hours (Ah) is capacity at that voltage.
- Watt-hours (Wh) is volts times amp-hours, the real measure of how much energy is on board and the best number for comparing range.
- Discharge rating is how much current the pack and its BMS (battery management system) can safely deliver. This limits how much power the motor can actually get.
Here's how some popular bikes compare stock:
- E-Ride Pro SS 2.0: 72V 40Ah, 2,880 Wh
- E-Ride Pro SS 3.0: 72V 50Ah, 3,600 Wh, swappable
- Sur-Ron Light Bee X: 60V 40Ah, 2,400 Wh
- Sur-Ron Ultra Bee: 74V 55Ah
- Talaria Sting R MX4: 60V 45Ah, 2,700 Wh
When a bigger battery makes sense
- You've already upgraded the controller and motor, and the stock pack is now the bottleneck (it sags or cuts out under load).
- You ride long distances and the stock pack is cutting rides short.
- Your stock battery is worn out and you're buying a pack anyway.
If you just want a bit more range on a stock bike, read the "ride farther without a new battery" section below first. It's usually cheaper.
Higher voltage: what it takes
Moving to a higher-voltage battery is a system upgrade, not a battery swap. A good example is the Ventus Ultra Bee Battery 96V 56Ah:
- 96V nominal, 56Ah, 5,251 Wh, built with 21700 cells and an IP67 rating.
- A smart BMS with a color display showing state of charge, voltage, current, cell balance and temperatures.
- Comes with a matching 96V charger.
- Requires an aftermarket controller. The stock Ultra Bee controller isn't built for 96V.
- The stock 12V converter must be unplugged or replaced with a high-voltage-rated one, or it can be damaged.
Pair it with a controller like the Ventus Aetos or EBMX X-9000 V3. See our power controllers guide for how these work together.
Ride farther without a new battery
- Pick the right bike. If range is your priority, the battery size matters most. The E-Ride Pro SS 3.0 carries 3,600 Wh versus 2,880 Wh on the SS 2.0.
- Carry a second battery on bikes with swappable packs.
- Charge faster between rides. The E-Ride Pro 72V 10A charger fits the S, SS 1.0/2.0/3.0, SR and 4.0 (not the Mini), and a second charger at work or in the truck is handy.
- Use eco mode and regen where your bike has them.
- Check tire pressure. Low pressure and heavy, aggressive tires cost range.
- Keep the drivetrain clean and lubed. A dry, tight chain wastes power.
- Ride smoother. Full-throttle launches use far more energy than steady riding.
Safety: don't cut corners
- Buy packs from established builders with a proper BMS. Cheap, unbranded packs are a fire risk.
- Use the charger made for your battery's voltage and chemistry.
- Don't charge a damaged, swollen or wet battery.
- Charge on a hard surface, away from anything that can burn, and don't leave it charging unattended for long periods.
Battery care that protects range
- Don't store the battery fully charged or fully empty for long periods. Store it at partial charge.
- Keep it out of extreme heat and cold. Let a hot pack cool before charging.
- Charge after rides instead of leaving it drained.
FAQs
Will a battery upgrade void my warranty?
It can. Electrical modifications often affect the manufacturer's warranty, so check your bike's terms before you change the battery, controller or motor.
Can I put a higher-voltage battery on my stock controller?
Generally no. The controller, 12V converter and other electronics need to be rated for the new voltage.
Do I need a new charger?
If the voltage changes, yes. Always use a charger matched to your battery.
