Brake Upgrades for Electric Dirt Bikes: Top Picks by Model

Stock brakes are usually the first thing that holds a fast electric dirt bike back. The motor pulls hard, the bike is heavier than a mountain bike, and most factory brakes are bicycle-style parts doing a motorcycle's job. If your lever comes back to the bar on a long downhill, or the brakes fade after a few hard stops, it's time.

This is our model-by-model shortlist of brake upgrades we carry and run ourselves. If you want the background on pads, rotors, calipers and fluid first, read our guide on how to improve e-moto stopping power, then come back here to pick parts.

The four upgrade paths

  • Pads – cheapest fix, and often the biggest improvement per dollar.
  • Bigger rotors – more leverage and more metal to soak up heat. Usually needs a caliper adapter.
  • Complete hydraulic brake systems – Formula and TRP four-piston systems built for lightweight e-motos.
  • Moto brake conversions – "Ultra Bee brakes": a real motorcycle-style caliper and master cylinder, plus optional foot brake kits.

E-Ride Pro

SS 3.0 and SR

These already run larger moto-style brakes, so the upgrades are about feel and heat:

S and SS 2.0

Sur-Ron

Light Bee X

Ultra Bee

Talaria

Sting R MX4, Sting MX3 and XXX

Sting MX5

The MX5 shares its larger caliper, pad and lever family with the E-Ride Pro SS 3.0/SR, so a lot of parts cross over:

Yozma and other pit bikes

The Ultra Bee Brake Upgrade Kit for Yozma, Tuttio, Strike, Valtinsu, Tasaca, Villain swaps the small stock rear brake for an Ultra Bee V2-style caliper and master cylinder. It uses your stock rotor and comes pre-bled. Check the axle size (12 mm or 15 mm) and bracket version listed on the product page.

79Bike, Rerode and Ventus

EBike Garage also makes moto brake conversions and foot brake kits for 79Bike and Ventus One. The TRP DH-R EVO lists the 79Bike Falcon M/Pro/GT and Rerode R1/R1+ as fits.

Where to start

  1. Pads first. If your brakes feel weak but don't fade, fresh performance pads may be all you need.
  2. Rotors next. A bigger rotor gives more bite and resists fade. Don't forget the adapter.
  3. Full system or moto conversion if you're fast, heavy or ride steep terrain.
