Power Kits: Unlocking the Full Potential of Your Talaria

Power upgrades get talked about a lot on Talarias, and the parts are confusing because every model is different. This guide explains what a "power kit" actually is, which controller and motor upgrades fit which Talaria, and what else you need to change so the extra power doesn't break something.

Heads up: big power upgrades are for off-road and private-property riding. They put more load on the battery, drivetrain, brakes and suspension. Many controller tunes also affect your warranty coverage, so check before you install.

How Talaria Power Upgrades Work

Three parts set how much power the bike makes:

  • Controller: decides how much current goes to the motor. On most Talarias this is the first and best-value upgrade.
  • Motor: once you're pushing more current, a stronger motor holds up better and makes more peak power.
  • Battery: the stock battery limits how much current you can pull. That's why the biggest power numbers on controller and motor listings assume an upgraded 72V battery.

Stock numbers for reference: the Sting R MX4 makes about 8 kW peak on a 60V battery. The MX5 is about 13.4 kW peak on 72V. The XXX is about 4.2 kW peak on 60V.

Controller: EBMX X-9000

The EBMX X-9000 V3 Controller is the most tunable Talaria controller we carry, so you can start mild and turn it up as you upgrade the rest of the bike. The EBMX X-9000 V3 Harness Kit is sold separately, with versions for the Sting MX3 / MX4 / MX5, XXX and XXX Pro. Make sure you order the controller and the harness for your exact bike.

What Else to Upgrade With More Power

  • Drivetrain: on the XXX, the stock belt primary drive is the weak link. The 219 RLV Belt to Chain Conversion Kit replaces it. On any model, check sprockets and chain more often.
  • Brakes: more speed needs more stopping power. MX4 and XXX owners can go to an Ultra Bee brake conversion like the TB Moto Brake Conversion Kit for MX4/XXX. MX5 owners can bolt on Formula EB9 brakes.
  • Rear suspension: on the Sting R MX4, upgrade the cast triangle first. The Heavy Hitter Reinforced Suspension Triangle is a common choice.
  • Gearing: after a power upgrade, gearing decides whether you get more top speed or more pull. Follow the gearing recommendations on the motor listing for your wheel size.

Install and Setup Tips

  • Turn the bike off and unplug the battery before you touch any wiring.
  • Start with a mild tune. Ride it, check motor and controller temperatures, and step up from there.
  • Watch your battery. Pulling more current than the stock BMS can handle causes cutouts, and over time it can shorten the battery's life.
  • Recheck all bolts and the motor mount after the first ride.

Which Upgrade Should You Do First?

  • Any Sting, first step: X-9000 V3 with the right harness and a mild tune.
  • Full build on a Sting: X-9000 plus a Sotion or XTA-60 motor, and plan on a better battery.
  • XXX: convert the belt drive first, then the X-9000 plus an XLB-60 kit.
