Talaria Sting MX5: How to Choose the Right Wheels and Tires for Your Ride

Wheels and tires change how a Talaria Sting MX5 rides more than almost anything else you can bolt on. The stock tires are narrow, especially the front. The right setup depends on whether you ride trails, motocross-style tracks or pavement. Here's how to choose, with options we've confirmed fit the MX5.

Know Your Stock Setup

  • The MX5 runs 19" wheels front and rear from the factory.
  • It uses 220 mm brake rotors and a 428 chain. That matters if you swap wheels, because the rotor and sprocket have to come with them or be moved over.
  • MX5 wheels are not the same as Sting MX3 / Sting R MX4 or XXX wheels. A wheel listed for "Talaria Sting" isn't automatically an MX5 fit, so check the fitment list.

Before you order tires, read the size off your current tire's sidewall. The last number is the rim diameter (for example, 70/100-19 fits a 19" rim).

Option 1: Better Tires on the Stock 19" Wheels

This is the cheapest upgrade and the right first step for most trail riders.

While the tire is off, put in a Tusk Heavy Duty 2mm Tube. Thin stock tubes pinch-flat easily on rocks.

Option 2: 19" Front / 16" Rear for Dirt

A 16" rear lets you run a taller, wider tire with more sidewall. That means more drive out of corners and more cushion on square edges, and it's a popular setup for jumps and tight trails. The KKE 16/19 Wheels for Talaria Sting MX5 come as a complete set (1.6x19 front, 1.85x16 rear) with bearings, seals and spacers. They use your stock rotors and sprocket.

Option 3: 17" Supermoto for the Street

If you ride mostly on pavement, knobbies wear fast and don't grip well. A supermoto set lowers the bike and puts real road tires on it. Both of these are bolt-on for the MX5:

A lot of riders keep their dirt wheels and swap sets depending on where they're riding.

Tire Pressure and Maintenance

  • Run lower pressure for traction in dirt and higher pressure on pavement. Stay within the range printed on the tire sidewall. Very low pressure with a standard tube invites pinch flats.
  • Check spoke tension and the rim lock after the first few rides on new wheels.
  • Replace wheel bearings when they feel gritty or loose. We stock front and rear bearing kits for the MX5.
  • If you change tires yourself, the Ultimate Tire Change Combo Kit has the irons and tools you need.

Quick Recommendations

  • Mostly trail, stock wheels: Tusk Ground Wire or Dunlop MX34 plus heavy-duty tubes.
  • Aggressive dirt and jumps: KKE 16/19 wheels with a 90/100-16 rear.
  • Mostly street: a 17" supermoto set.
