Sur-Ron Ultra Bee: Top Braking Upgrades for Better Control and Safety

The Sur-Ron Ultra Bee has hydraulic disc brakes with 240 mm rotors, and for casual trail riding they're fine. Ride it hard, add power, or run long descents, and you'll feel them fade. The good news: the fixes are simple and most bolt right on. Here's what we'd upgrade, in order.

1. Brake pads (start here)

Pads are the cheapest and biggest improvement. The stock pads work, but they fade quickly when they get hot.

Sintered vs. organic: sintered (metallic) pads last longer, handle heat better and work better in mud and water. They can be a bit noisier, especially when cold. For off-road riding, sintered is the right call.

2. Rotors

A bigger rotor gives the caliper more leverage, so you get more stopping power with less lever effort. A floating rotor handles heat cycles better and is less likely to warp.

Always bed in new pads and rotors: a series of firm stops from moderate speed before you ride hard.

3. Levers

Levers don't add power, but they change how well you can use it. Adjustable reach lets you set the lever where one or two fingers can modulate it, and folding or break-away levers survive tip-overs.

4. Foot brake conversion

If you come from gas dirt bikes, a real foot-operated rear brake feels natural and frees your left hand. The EBIKE Garage Foot Brake Kit For Surron Ultra Bee is a complete kit.

5. Protect what you've got

Rear rotors take hits from rocks and ruts. A Warp 9 Surron Ultra Bee Rear Rotor Guard or the aluminum Rear Brake Disk Guard keeps a bent rotor from ending your ride.

Which upgrades fit how you ride?

  • Trail and enduro: competition or sintered pads, a floating rotor, folding or break-away levers, and a rear rotor guard.
  • Street and supermoto: pads plus a bigger front rotor. Most of your stopping happens up front at speed.
  • Added power: do pads and rotors before you turn the power up, not after.

Install tips

  • Bike on a stand, key off.
  • Keep brake fluid and grease off pads and rotors. Contaminated pads usually have to be replaced.
  • Use a torque wrench on rotor and caliper bolts, and use thread locker on rotor bolts.
  • If you open the hydraulic system (lines, levers, foot brake kit), bleed it fully. Any air gives you a spongy lever.
  • Replace pads before the friction material gets down to about 1–2 mm.

FAQs

What's the best first brake upgrade for an Ultra Bee?

Pads. EBMX Competition pads make the biggest difference for the money.

Do I need a caliper adapter for a bigger rotor?

Not at 240 mm (stock size). The Warp 9 260 mm and 300 mm front rotors include the adapter.

Can I install these myself?

Pads, rotors and levers are straightforward. Foot brake kits involve bleeding the system, so take your time or get help.

Will brake upgrades affect my warranty?

Check with your dealer. Bolt-on brake parts are usually not an issue, but every dealer is different.
